Conflict… it’s something that most people today tr

Conflict… it’s something that most people today try to avoid at all costs.

And there are costs… when we don’t understand how to deal with conflict with our dogs, everybody loses.

Some dogs are willing to go into conflict, some dogs love conflict, but all dogs will have to deal with conflict at one point or another in their lives.

This is a more extreme version of conflict. A manipulative dog has learned to use her teeth as a way of getting what she wants, or getting out of what she doesn’t want.

I need to teach her that this won’t work with me. I won’t back away and I won’t escalate further. More importantly, I’m not afraid and I won’t allow it to get in the way of guiding her through life.

Boundaries are so important and if this dog can’t learn them, she will quickly shrink her life to almost nothing. Already her owner can only walk her at 4am before all the other dogs in the neighborhood wake up.

Even going to the park or on a hike is off limits and seems like a pipe dream.

It’s possible and we will work through this, go into conflict with calm and confidence, and come out on the other side stronger together.

A “well-behaved” dog and a “well-trained” dog might look similar on the surface—but they come from very different places.

A well-behaved dog is largely a product of temperament. They’re naturally easygoing, tolerant, or low-energy, so they appear compliant in many environments. They may not react strongly to distractions, guests, or new situations—not because they’ve learned what to do, but because nothing internally is pushing them to respond otherwise.

But here’s the catch: temperament has limits. Change the environment enough—add stress, excitement, fear, or higher-level distractions—and that “good behavior” can quickly fall apart because it was never taught, only assumed.

A well-trained dog is different.

Training is the process of conditioning clear, repeatable behaviors in specific contexts. Through structured exposure, reinforcement, and consistency, the dog learns what to do, when to do it, and how to stay accountable even when it’s difficult.

A trained dog doesn’t ignore distractions by accident—they’ve learned how to disengage.
They don’t walk calmly just because they’re mellow—they’ve practiced leash pressure, position, and focus.
They don’t “just behave” in new environments—they’ve been systematically prepared for them.

In other words:
Well-behaved = compatible when conditions are easy.
Well-trained = reliable even when conditions are not.

Temperament can give you a head start—but it’s not a substitute for clarity, structure, and communication.

If you want a dog that you can truly depend on—in real life, not just ideal situations—training is what creates that consistency.
